Are we all deviants?

JODIE: Romance books. You've all heard the trope, that it's dirty books. With covers like this:

Back in the late 80s early 90s, it took a brave woman to flick it out and read it on the train. Some might've sneered, and others might've snickered, but in the back of some people's heads they might wonder about the woman who reads/writes the novel with heaving bosoms and turgid shafts. You can only fall into two categories. You could either be an unhappy housewife or some sex kitten who wants it and wants it bad. Enter erotic romance. Rampant sex, happy blowjobs and BDSM, oh my! Yes, in erotic romances there are women who would gladly have a one night stand, no strings attached. Who would masturbate and give a blowjob, ready to swallow at the end of it all.

Erotic romance isn't ashamed of its blatant sexual content. So, are we really sex crazed?

SIDNEY: Hell no! Men have Playboy and porn, women have books. We're wired differently, and not everyone embraces or even understands that. As women, we want an emotional and titillating journey. We want to discover something about ourselves, have an adventure, be swept off our feet -- and get down and dirty. I think that in a lot of ways women are still claiming their sexuality. Once upon a time, sex was a chore, something we did for procreation or the pleasure of our spouse maybe. It's still not socially acceptable to be comfortable with your sexuality, but it's becoming something people talk about and learn about. I think that's one reason why the erotic market has taken off. A lot of people aren't ready to lead the charge on some poor, unsuspecting man, but within the context of a book, we can enjoy that experience of sexual maturity. Jodie, what do you think has made these changes acceptable?

JODIE: I think the fact that romance in itself existed along with the development of the women's movement. Back in the late 70s romance novels generally had alphas that were, to be honest, asshats. They dominated the woman without care for their wants and needs. That being said, that does happen in erotic romance today, but more along the line of what is called 'forced seduction'. It's a delicate line the writer walks when creating such a scene. It must show initial hesitation and end in her ultimate and happy capitulation. Ellora's Cave draws a hard line to rape and they make no exceptions. Some women might like to have a man dominate her and show her what she really wants, but it's not rape when she is ultimately satisfied. Forced seductions shouldn't also be related to exclusively BDSM type stories. Sometimes a little forced seduction might be just what the doctor ordered.

SIDNEY: Exactly! Everyone needs something specific from their sexual journey. I read several capture fantasies and came to the realization that it's just not my cup of tea. And that's okay! I will admit that I love to curl up and read a good BDSM themed book. There's something about the power exchange between the characters and the dynamics at play that makes for a powerful backdrop. If anything would make me a sexual deviant, it would be that. Heck, BDSM was considered a mental illness for quite a while, and still is in some areas. Granted, it takes a particular person to enjoy those types of activities. But there's nothing wrong with a contemporary setting, no toys or props involved. Through romance you can travel the wide scope of possibilities in romance, from the alpha hero to the beta boy, from sweet to sinful. A person can learn a lot about themselves just through the pages of a book, right Jodie?

JODIE: I think so. I think romance isn't dirty or pointless or lacks substance.  It's a book filled with the most basic wants of a human being. Companionship and the need to be loved. Sure with an ample amount of hot steamy sex, but who is complaining? Sex in romance is steamy, moving and yes, even in an erotic romance, essential to the forward motion of the plot. We like our turgid erections gleaming with pre-cum and the way the heroine orgasms in every single sexual interaction. It might be fantasy, but the journey fills us with joy when there is a Happily Ever After.

SIDNEY: There's nothing wrong with fantasy, or our secret desires. Books allow us the chance to live vicariously through characters and our imagination. For whatever reason you read and enjoy naughty stories, it's yours, and we're more than happy to help with our little stories and horny characters.
