Character Interview: THE LAST GIRL by Kitty Thomas

Hello everyone. Today we have a special guest here at the blog.  I’m interviewing Christian from The Last Girl by Kitty Thomas.

Hi Christian. Thanks for agreeing to this interview. First let me say that you’re a really sexy guy in a dark twisted sort of way. But you’re kind of a scary character to interact with so please forgive my nerves. And please don’t bite me (unless you’re offering a happy ending with that bite)!

Christian: Unfortunately my bite has no happy ending.

AsianCocoa: So, let’s start off with a few basic questions about your life:
How old are you?

Christian: 782. I’m a scorpio.

AC: Have you ever been married?

Christian:  No.

AC: Do you have any children?

Christian: I’ve turned two women, but it ended badly both times.

AC: How were you made vampire? How old were you when it happened and was it against your will?

Christian: I was drunk when I was turned and woke in a ditch an hour before sunrise after the requisite three days. I assume it was against my will since I was too inebriated to recall the event. I don’t know who turned me and I never saw him or her again. I was 27.

AC: What period of time has been your favorite to live in?

Christian: The roaring twenties.

AC: What do you think about the women of the 21st century?

Christian: I think they worry too much about looking weak compared to the male of the species. I’m not sure what that’s about.

AC: You waited 70 years to take a new human pet. You discovered Juliette when she was only thirteen. Can you tell me what it was about Juliette that was so appealing?

Christian: I couldn’t hypnotize her. I don’t like puppets for pets and especially with my age it is harder and harder to find a human who can resist my thrall. I could still read her mind, of course, but I couldn’t put my own suggestions in her head. I found that intriguing.

AC: There’s a really terrifying scene in your dungeon that shocked and scared the hell out of me. I know how Juliette was feeling throughout but what were you thinking and feeling during that moment with Juliette?

Christian: I can’t remember it. I’m sorry. I was too lost in the haze.

AC:  I know you own quite a bit of business real estate in Tampa including a boutique and a couple of clubs. I want to know some details about your BDSM club. What’s the wildest thing that you’ve seen or participated in?

Christian: I’m so jaded now that I’m not sure what you humans would think of as wild, though there have been some animals involved in some things. I assume that would be the most horrific/taboo thing to you humans that’s ever occurred in my club.

AC: Do you enjoy being a sadistic vampire? Do you ever wish you were less evil?

Christian: Sadistic implies enjoyment so, I suppose the question was answered before you asked it. Let’s just say I don’t enjoy that I lose far too many pets to my sadism and leave it at that. And I’m not evil. I’m evil from your perspective but humans are food. Do you eat meat? Are you evil because of it? It’s my nature to feed on and kill humans and it’s my nature to play with my food. I won’t apologize for that nature and don’t expect you to apologize for yours. I don’t consider it evil, but I wish I didn’t have to kill them. I don’t want my pets to die.

AC: Do you believe in love and happily ever after?

Christian: Of course I believe in love. Do you believe in sunshine or rain? But happily ever after? With me? No. For human beings with other human beings? Yes.

Now for a few easy questions.

Boxers or briefs?  Neither

Vodka or tequila shots? Maker’s Mark (so, neither.)

Virgins or whores? *chuckles* Oh you know the answer to that one. Virgins.

What’s your favorite:

Song?  It’s nothing you’ve heard before.

Book?  The Count of Monte Cristo. I actually had the pleasure of meeting Dumas once. I prevented Nadine from killing him, so that piece of literature wouldn’t be here without my intervention. I like to think of that book as his thank you to me for saving his life.

Sexual position?  Doggie

Body part on a woman?  Wherever the best artery is.

Is Juliette your last girl?  :-) What do you think?

Thank you so much for answering my questions, Christian.

No problem.

The Last Girl
by Kitty Thomas
Publisher: Burlesque Press
Release Date: February 12, 2012

Six years ago strangers broke into Juliette’s house; she was home alone and only thirteen. She kept her eyes closed, praying that if she didn’t see anything, she wouldn’t be killed. No one harmed her. In fact, one of the thieves protected her. Now Juliette’s dreams are haunted by him.

Christian has waited to take her, resisting the urge each night. It always ends badly with human pets. They’re too fragile. The longer he can wait, the better, because the moment he takes her, the clock on her life starts ticking down.

Then she’ll be gone forever.

Warning: This book is meant for a mature audience and contains master/slave, group sexual activity, sadomasochism, girl-on-girl, oral and anal play, exhibitionism, blood play, edge play, as well as one other thing I’m not warning you about because it would be a spoiler... but it’s not a big taboo.

I feel absurd being a nineteen-year-old virgin, a fossil from another time. Part of me is just glad to do the deed and get the fucking thing over. I feel like I’ve got a white V emblazoned on me, or as if I give off some type of scent. I don’t like the idea that something that should be private feels as if it’s somehow being broadcast.

I open the door a little bleary-eyed, my hair still mussed from oversleeping.

“Did I wake you?”

He’s got this stupid grin on his face. And flowers. I want to smack him. I know this is all because I’ve decided to give in and put out after three months of dating. I feel like I should love him if I’m going to do this.

I run my hands self-consciously through my hair.

“You look great,” he says, holding out the flowers.

No I don’t. I know it. He knows it. He’s just so happy to be getting laid tonight that he’s seeing me through horny-guy glasses. I’m still too sleepy to be annoyed.

I put the flowers in a glass of water and slip some flip flops on. It’s Southern Florida. Flip flops are a year-round joy here.

He’s got something romantic planned at the beach. Black cloth goes over my eyes as we get out of the car—a blindfold. I almost panic, but then I realize if I make a fuss, it will invite questions I can never answer. So I smile shakily and allow him to lead me down to the beach. My flip flops are still in the car. I breathe slowly in and out, listening to the waves crash against the shore, inhaling the crisp, salty scent of the sea, feeling the instability of sand collapsing beneath my feet.

“Don’t move. I’ll be right back. I’ve got to get a couple of things.”

I try not to be in that dark closet. I try, but I can’t help it. I’m there again, my eyes squeezed tightly shut, silently begging not to be found, not to be killed. A hand is on my arm again, leading me away and I come out of the fog, remembering I’m here with Devon. Everything’s okay.

“Where are we going?”

“Shhh”

My heart starts to hammer faster in my chest. Then it pounds and vibrates in my head. My entire being is one rapidly thudding heartbeat with no slowdown in sight. Something is wrong here, but I can’t make myself remove the cloth from my eyes.

You’re being ridiculous. It’s just Devon. He has a surprise.

I find myself in the passenger seat of a car. It’s not Devon’s car. I just know. Even blindfolded I know. This is the point where I should rip the scrap of fabric off and run. There is no evidence this person has a weapon, and he or she hasn’t spoken to me yet. But before my hands can move to the blindfold, the driver’s side door is shut and the car has started.

It’s so fast, I assume there must be more than one person involved. Tears gather and absorb into the thick cloth covering my eyes. Terror freezes me, keeping me from taking off the blindfold, from trying to leap out of the car that’s moving too fast now anyway. I’m suddenly thirteen again. The dream is real, and I believe that if I don’t see them, they won’t kill me.

I’m silent and they are silent. The only sound is the wheels scraping against the rough road and the occasional bump. My tears are coming harder now. Why can’t I fight back? Scream? Beg? Try to escape? Just take the fucking blindfold off! But I can’t do it. I may as well be tied up because I’m so scared I don’t know what to do or what to think.

A little while passes and the car stops. Again, too fast for me to react, my door is open and someone is helping me out. How many are there?

I cringe away but find my feet moving in the direction I’m being led. “Don’t hurt me. Please.”

Then I feel stupid. What if it’s Devon? What if this is part of some stupid frat thing he’s gotten himself into? It would be just like him to combine my deflowering with a secret frat party or something.

I expect someone to start giggling or say I’m a spaz, but fingers gently grasps my wrist, lifting my hand. I feel the planes of his face as he guides me to see him. I shake my head in disbelief.

No.

I was good. I didn’t say anything. I didn’t tell anyone anything. This can’t happen. I did what I was supposed to do. But it’s him. It’s my nightmare.

“I missed you, Juliette.”

Christian.

Author Bio -

Kitty Thomas writes dark literary fiction that explores power dynamics and sexuality (back in the olden days people called it erotica). This work is fiction and meant for an adult audience. The author does not endorse or condone any of the behavior carried out by characters in her stories.

Her work is not “erotic romance”. Often on some level it is about love and/or obsession. Often the couple in some way ends up “together”, but the work should not be expected to follow the conventions of any type of genre romance, erotic or otherwise. If you are looking for genre romance (erotic or otherwise), please read a different author. Erotic romance is “more explicit romance”. This is something different.

Inspiration for Kitty’s work comes from many sources including Story of O, Nine and a Half Weeks, and the work of Claudia D. Christian.

Waiting on Wednesday: THE RIPPLE EFFECT by J.A. Saare

The Ripple Effect
 by J.A. Saare
Release Date: Summer 2012

There is always a price to pay…

Rhiannon Murphy visited the future, witnessed hell on earth and made choices to change things for the greater good. Unfortunately there are consequences for her actions, the penalties for her interference possibly more than she can bear. Determined to sever her debt with a fallen angel, she pushes everything aside, focusing on locating Marigold Vesta’s resting place.

Until death comes knocking at her door.

When Disco’s maker arrives in New York, he resents Rhiannon on a level she can’t begin to comprehend. Yet Marius isn’t her most dangerous adversary, not by a long shot. Marius’s sire -- a half-demon -- is determined to see the necromancer who stunned the vampire world on her knees. If she won’t bend, he’ll do everything in his power to make her break. No price is too high, meaning no one is safe -- including Disco and Paine.

Dealt a blow from which she can never recover, Rhiannon turns to the only person who can help her: the fallen angel who is relying on Rhiannon to save her soul. Bartering with a creature from Heaven is probably just as dangerous as starting a war with a demon from Hell, but with nothing to lose it’s no longer about life or death.

It’s about getting even.

This is the third installment in the Rhiannon's Law series. I can't wait to see what happens with this love triangle between Rhiannon,  Gabriel (Disco), and Payne. The author has said that this is going to be a really dark story. Bring it on! I can't wait!

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine to showcase the books we can’t wait to get our hands on.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Sharla Lovelace - THE REASON IS YOU

Hi Everyone. Please help me welcome Sharla Lovelace to the blog today! She is here to promote her new novel, The Reason Is You. Today she is going to talk about ghosts.

Thanks for having me!  I’m thrilled to be here talking to all of you.

I know when it comes to the unusual, everyone’s tastes run in different streams.  Paranormal can go dark and scary, with demons or vampires—or light and mystical.  Mine runs on the light side.  Visions, empathic touch, special powers…

Ghosts…

Love me some ghosts!  Not the Paranormal Activity kind (I know, that’s a demon, not a ghost).  I don’t do things that grab your foot and drag you out of bed and down the hall.  (God, no…I HATED that part!  Kept me up eyeing my bedcovers for weeks)
But a sexy ghost?  That’s my calling card.

My main character, Dani, met her sexy ghost when she was sixteen.  He showed up to help her out of a bad situation, and became her best friend throughout her life.  Alex is every woman’s perfect man.  Well, except for that little ‘being dead’ thing.

And while many ghost stories depict spirits as see through or floating, I chose not to.  I wanted Alex and the other spirits in the story to look like the rest of us.  I wanted there to be a reason that a child with the gift of that particular sight wouldn’t know the difference between the dead and the living, when talking to people.  There are consequences for touching them—forgetting things, dizzy spells, strange déjà vu.  Those things that happen to all of us and we dismiss them without a thought.  Could we be brushing up against someone that has passed on?

It’s a thought…

Hope you all enjoy the book!

~  Sharla

The Reason Is You
by Sharla Lovelace
Release Date: April 3, 2012

In the small river town of Bethany, Dani Shane never fit in. Being different pushed her to the fringes of society, and even leaving town for two decades didn't stop the talk. Now, with her sixteen year-old daughter Riley in tow, Dani is back in Bethany looking for a fresh start. Too bad her plans for staying under the radar are about to be thrown out the window.

Mischievous and sexy, Dani's old friend Alex still has the power to rock her world, but there's a big obstacle standing in their way—Alex has been dead for forty years. With a ghost popping up at inopportune moments and sparking conversations with her teenage daughter, Dani scrambles to find solid ground and get a grip—both on her sanity and her heart.

EXCERPT:

Preface:  Dani visits her mother’s grave.

I knew where I was going when I left, and it was the opposite direction from home. Within minutes, I wound through the neatly graveled figure eights, eventually landing at the end of a small rise. I got out and walked back two rows to the pinkish gray granite stone that sported my mother’s name and date of death. April 16, 1970. The day I was born.

My dad never let it be that way. Never once was my birthday anything other than my birthday. I only knew that my mother lived in the cemetery instead of at the house with us, and we kept flowers there for her and frequently went through the scrapbook she made when she was pregnant. I was six when I really noticed the date, and my dad explained it casually as being insignificant because she was just happy she got to see and hold me there at home where I was born, before God took her to heaven.

I never wondered if I killed her.

I did wonder why she never came around to tell me that herself. A million other people felt the need to tell me their postmortem thoughts.

“But not you, huh, Mom?” Nope. Never her. I took a deep breath. “We need you—me and Riley.”

It felt awkward to say that, having never known her or had any kind of relationship with her. I always visited, always talked to her about what I was doing as if she couldn’t possibly know otherwise. But I never asked for anything. Not even advice. Not even back then when I really needed a mom. I didn’t know how to have one.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Amy Corwin

Hi Everyone. Please help me welcome Amy Corwin to the blog today! This is one of the last stops on her Goddess Fish book tour. She is here to promote her regency mystery novels, The Wild Principle, A Rose Before Dying andThe Necklace. Today she is going to talk about research.

Research: Too Much, Not Enough, or Never Quite Right

Research truly is the bain of my existence. No matter how much research I do, there’s always something I don’t know, some detail I misunderstand. No to mention the inconvenient reality that facts quite often interfere with fiction.

In the book I’m working on now, Hidden Aspects, I wanted the coroner to be able to determine the time of death with relative accuracy. Unfortunately, during the early years of the 19th century, this was not a simple matter. Medical thermometers, for example, wouldn’t be in use until the latter half of the century so he couldn’t use the cooling rate of the body. In fact, the science of forensics was in its infancy, or perhaps still in the womb, at this point.

However, on the bright side, it is much easier to find good research materials now. Even storing them is easier. I have dozens of medical and legal texts from the late 18th/early 19th century so it is much easier to include details or oddities in these fields, based upon actual material from the time. In fact, research I had done on medicines prescribed during the Regency led me to write The Vital Principle.

One of the reasons I enjoy writing historical mysteries is my fascination with the development of medicine and forensics. Modern science, medicine, and forensics frankly intimidate me, but the medical texts of the 19th century seem much more accessible. I adore weaving the medical practices, science or philosophies of the period into my books, particularly when I can use them to expose a murderer.

The beginning of the 19th century is the oddest mixture of science and superstition. Doctors still bled their patients, despite the fact that it generally only expedited their departure from this world. Many of the medicines contained downright lethal chemicals such as arsenic and even cyanide, but anything that made the patient void (empty his stomach or bowels) was considered efficacious. That’s what made the development of the scientific method: actually testing against a control group and a test group and tracking the results in a way that the experiment could be reliably duplicated, was such a significant change.

Prior to the novel idea of tracking real results, doctors and others simply used the same methods over and over again, regardless of the outcome. It’s true that in each generation, a few stumbled upon some new technique or medicine and moved the science forward, but it wasn’t until the methodical application of scientific method that we really started improving our state. Frankly, before mid-1800, you were better off being poor and unable to afford the care of a doctor. Physicians and surgeons were more likely to kill you than cure you. If you got better at all it was largely in spite of his efforts on your behalf. In fact, witch doctors were probably even more effective and better overall since they rarely prescribed poisons, drained your blood, and the value of mind-over-matter was highly underrated. It’s still underrated, even today.

Well, you can see were all this easy access to research material is getting me. I’m not a doctor, I just write about them. Coroners, too. And inquiry agents.

A Rose Before Dying
by Amy Corwin

A murderer is stalking the streets of London and the evidence points to Sir Edward, the uncle of Charles Vance, Earl of Castlemoor. The first victim is none other than Sir Edward’s mistress who threw him over for a younger man, giving him a clear motive to kill her. However, Charles is convinced Sir Edward is innocent and enlists the aide of Mr. Knighton Gaunt of the Second Sons Inquiry Agency. When more clues surface, including roses hinting at another victim, Charles steps in and takes control. He can’t let his uncle hang for murders he didn’t commit, despite his uncle’s foul temper and abundant motivation.
Charles teams up with noted rosarian Ariadne Wellfleet to decipher the clues and prove Sir Edward’s innocence and stop the murderer before he can strike again.

~**~

Charles Vance, Lord Castlemoor, has brought a rose to the Wellfleets, hoping someone can identify it. The rose is the only clue he has to identify the next victim of a vicious killer bent on framing Charles’ uncle.

EXCERPT

He pulled out the small bundle containing the rose. He knew it was useless, her father, the rose expert, was dead. But he couldn’t stop a small spurt of hope. “I’d like to identify this rose. Do you recognize it?”

“I supposed you’re only asking me as a last resort. Because my father is no longer with us.” She held out a peremptory hand. “Let me see it.”

Her face was a smooth, expressionless mask. However, he detected traces of tired resignation at the implication that she could not be expected to have the depth of knowledge exhibited by a man.

When he placed the limp spray in her palm, she held it up to her nose and breathed in several times with closed eyes, cupping the flowers in her hands. Then she gave it a cursory examination before pulling the petals off of one flower.

“Stop!” He reached over to wrench it out of her hand. She turned her shoulder, blocking him. “What are you doing?”

“Counting the petals. Why?”

“You’re destroying it! How shall I identify it if you ruin it?”

She held it out. “Take it. Plant it, or allow me to root it. Or graft it. If it grows, you can ask your friend, Mr. Lee, to identify it in two or three years from the shape of the bush and bloom habit. Most men who grow roses agree that it takes at least one cycle of blooming to identify a rose with any assurance.”

“Two years!”

“Yes—if you want to be sure. And isn’t that why you wish to identify it? So you can purchase a specimen for your own garden?”

“Yes—but….”

“Yes?”

He gazed into her coolly discerning eyes and realized she was aware that he was not being open with her. But given Mr. Lee’s reaction, he could not bring himself to tell the complete truth. The rose wouldn’t last long enough to find another master gardener, assuming he could even locate one in London. “It’s…a wager. Silly, I know, but one of my friends said I couldn’t identify this rose.” The tips of his ears burned.

“I see.” Her eyes grew colder. “This is all a wager?” She glanced at Rose.

“No, of course not. Not Rose—she’s not part of it.”

Miss Wellfleet’s fingers pushed the petals into a line on the table and hovered over them. Thirteen petals, thin and wilting, spread in a tattered line. The slender spray was dying. The small, tight buds had already blackened and hung limply. His chest tightened with frustration.

Then with a theatrical gesture that suggested more defiance than scientific inquiry, she ripped apart the remaining flowers. She arranged the petals in three parallel lines, one for each flower. The roses didn’t all have the same number of petals. The first had thirteen petals. The next had eleven. The final rose had seventeen.

After examining what remained of the stalk, the yellow stamens, and leaves, she looked at him.

Although she didn’t precisely shrug, there was a quality in her expression that spoke of disdain when she said, “Rosa Collina fastigiata.”

“That’s it?” His tired disappointment reminded him of the lateness of the hour. Useless. He needn’t have come here at all. Lee had it right the first time.

“Well, yes. What were you expecting?”

“Something…more. A name….”

“That is a name.” Irritation sharpened her voice. “Or Flat-Flowered Hill Rose, if you prefer an English one.”

“You’re sure?”’

Her eyes hardened. “As sure as I can be from this small spray.” She flung the petals and twig onto the table. “No one can be absolutely sure without seeing the bush and knowing the growth habit and bloom cycles. Have you any idea how many roses there are?”

“I—”

“That’s why your friend made a clever wager—if wager it was.”

“No. Truly, I apologize. I sincerely appreciate the name.”

“It’s late. You have your name. I hope you win your wager.”

With a coolness he deserved but saddened him nonetheless, she gestured for him to leave. The butler, Mr. Abbott, waited just outside the French doors to the greenhouse. His silent presence ensured Miss Wellfleet had never been truly alone with Charles. Somehow, this reminded him of how attractive he found her, and he flushed when he caught Mr. Abbott’s curious gaze.

However, his embarrassment faded as he remembered his purpose.

A life could be saved if he interpreted Rosa Collina fastigiata properly.

How many people named Collins lived in London? Unless the clue rested with the English name, Flat-Flowered Hill Rose. Did this blossom point to a location instead of a person?

Time was slipping away.

The Vital Principle
by Amy Corwin

In 1815, inquiry agent, Knighton Gaunt, is asked by Lord Crowley to attend a séance with the express purpose of revealing the spiritualist as a fraud. When the séance ends abruptly, an unseen killer poisons Lord Crowley, leaving Gaunt to investigate not fraud, but murder.

Suspicion turns first to the spiritualist, Miss Prudence Barnard. But as Gaunt digs deeper into the twisted history of the guests at Rosecrest, he discovers a series of deadly secrets. Long-time friends soon turn against one another as the tension mounts, and Gaunt is challenged to separate fact from fiction before another death at Rosecrest.

The Necklace
by Amy Corwin

Legends foretell death for anyone who possesses the fabled Peckham emerald necklace, lost by an Archer ancestor. Certainly, it has brought the Archers nothing but heartache. So Oriana is relieved it’s missing, assuming it ever existed. She has enough difficulties protecting her uncle—and her heart--from his dangerous new friend, Chilton Dacy. However, when Oriana finds the necklace, the curse reawakens. The necklace disappears, only to reappear clutched in a dead man’s hand.

The stranger’s death leaves Oriana with a frightening choice: ask Chilton for help, or face the possibility that she may hang for murder.

Giveaway: Kindle Fire at Zoe Winters' Easter Egg Hunt

Easter Egg Hunt with Zoe Winters

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to make you aware of a really cool giveaway going on over at Zoe Winters’ blog. The grand prize is a Kindle Fire! Here are some of the details from her blog:

The grand prize is a Kindle Fire. I’m telling you that up front so you will read this post, carefully.

I am holding an Easter egg hunt all this week, through Easter Sunday, ending at Midnight Eastern Time April 8th. (OR ACTUALLY TO BE MORE FAIR: Books for the hunt will be on sale through April 8th but I will give readers through midnight April 15th to get their list of Easter Eggs to me. That way I give you a week to get the books on sale if you don’t already have them as reference materials, but you have 2 weeks to actually read/find the eggs.)

What is an Easter Egg? In the literary world, an Easter Egg is a reference back to something else from one book to another. If you ever watched Buffy The Vampire Slayer they did that a lot. Like… in season seven they still had inside jokes about things that happened in episodes of season 1.

Easter Eggs are generally kind of obscure little things that are only going to be “caught” by those who have read the other books.

If you’re a fan of the Preternaturals series, then… you have a slight edge, but… if you’ve only read a few of the books or none of them, don’t worry, you still have a chance! I’m going to make entry into the contest easy. If you don’t already have the books, for this week only, for the contest, the following “reference materials” for the Easter Egg hunt will be 99 cents each. (This makes it possible to fully engage for $4.) I want to make entry into this contest as easy/affordable for anyone who isn’t already a fan as possible, because obviously I want more fans/readers!

The books included:

Cat Fight (short story):
Cat Fight @ Amazon 99 cent sale!
Cat Fight @ Smashwords (coupon code: UF39H Coupon good through April 8th)
Cat Fight @ Barnes and Noble 99 cent sale!

Dark Mercy: (novella)
